Pirate For A Day
And just like that-with a few shots, and some hazy memories, halloween 2015 is over and done. How time flies, indeed. Now, everyone's singing Christmas carols, ripping all the pumpkins, ghouls and other spooky decorations and setting up the Santas, the reindeers, and all other Christmas decors you could think of.
So, as halloween ends, let me share what i wore to celebrate the occassion. I was planning to be someone totally different from this one but since I simply had no time to look for the necessary pieces, I conjured the easiest costume I could find. And considering that I literally decided to be a pirate only on the last minute, I guess I'm okay with the result.
What I'm Wearing: Pirate Hat (Skitzo Manila), Studden Button-down (Mundo), Jeans (Zara), Boots (Dr. Martens)
Though there is no hard and fast rule in coming up with a costume on the last minute except to have fun and go craay with it, here's more or less my thinking process (bear in my mind, though, that this may apply only to costumes without character reference). First, find a headpiece. Not all costumes necessarily involve a headpiece but I figured out that the simplest/easiest ones (pirate, cowboy, royalty, devil, etc) do. It's easy to find headpieces in so many costume/ toy shops and they only cost quite few pesos. To some people, in fact, the costume ends there. But if you're someone like me, you probably wanna do more. That leads us to number two: research. With the headpiece you have, try to do a google some inspiration for the look. Though you may already have some general idea what the ensemble should look like, it never hurts to add some new perspective as to what may or may not work-out. Third, rustle your closet for pieces that, when put together, would closely resemble your general idea/the inspiration you have searched on the net. You'll be surprised what treasures your closet hides.
PS: This look is also my entry to cookbook's halloween 2105 contest, and here's what I wrote about it:
"We’ve all had that dream of stepping into someone else’s shoes, and finding out how to live the life of (or at least, dress up like) “that guy”- a movie character, a cartoon character, or just a random generic character. For this reason, Halloween is, undoubtedly, on my top 3 holidays. It’s the only time of the year when I could, in a way, pretend to be someone I am not or something I’ll never be. This year, I decided to dress up as a pirate not because I’ve been influenced by the mainstream media but because I’ve always wondered what it’s like to live in the high seas, unbound by any state law, nor by society’s notion of what should and shouldn’t be. I admit I do not know a lot about pirates but they always strike me as the freest of the free folks, a happy go-lucky, rum-drinking brothers at arms. They say all men are free but it is also no secret that the society shapes the what is and what is not, the what can and what cannot, and the what should and shouldn’t be to fit in the general consensus. So, the question is, are we truly free? And if I were, say, a pirate, would I have the same thoughts? Believe the same beliefs? I guess I’ll never know. So as solace, let me just dress like a pirate for a day(night)."
