Man of the Streets

The recent years have elevated streetwear from what was generally described as cheap and tacky, and into something more refined and expensive to the point of becoming one of this year’s hottest trends.

While in the distant past, it was all about plain logo shirts, plain old sneakers, logo hats, and loud and demanding colors; today’s streetwear aficionados would only shiver at the thought. Now, it’s all about the fit, shape, and low-intensity color hues.

Today’s street fashion can be manifested in different ways and clothing pieces but usually it can be seen in layering outfits, oversized shirts, graphic/printed tees/shirts/jackets, drop crotch pants, and of course, the never-ending sneaker fever.

But for today’s post, I’m showing how street fashion is manifested thru layering, oversized, and printed clothing pieces.

What I'm Wearing: Snapback (H&M), Long Shirt (H&M), Jacket (H&M), Ripped Jeans (21 Men), White Sneakers (Bershka)

First, printed shirts/jackets are just that so there's nothing much to talk about it except that when you do decide to wear anything printed, keep the other pieces plain and simple. However, I made an exception on this post since the jacket and the shirt have a similar design, much like how you could partner a printed top with a similarly-designed printed shorts for the summer.

Second, let's talk about the layering. Possibly the most current streetwear trend is the use of extensive layering by throwing in 2 to 3 layers (max of 2 in the Philippines cause of the weather), and keeping them at different lengths. To be able to do this, layer a regular-length jacket over an oversized long shirt, or an extremely long jacket over an obvious long shirt but never, and I mean, NEVER!! pair a long jacket over a regular-length shirt. I don't know why, but I just find it funny (I'm not an expert on this though so feel free to rebut).

Third, the long shirts. True, they're the craze right now but long shirts can be very tricky pull off as they can only look good with skinny and taller guys. Now, I'm not saying I'm tall nor skinny; in fact, I consider myself short (I'm 5'6) with normal built, but I feel like I have found at least one way to work my way around it. Longer than normal shirts still come in different lengths *surprise surprise* so it doesn't always have to be the extremely long ones. Since I consider myself one of the shorter guys, I find medium-length-longer-than-usual-shirts working perfectly fine. There's a lot these in H&M and Bershka. Also, since I consider myself non-skinny (but not fat. obviously), I also tend to wear looser (but not baggy) jackets-preferrably those that are one size bigger when I layer one over a long shirt to give that impression of effortless straight out of bed look instead.
